What is a SIM card?

SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module and is a small microchip that stores information for a mobile phone. It contains information about your network account allows your phone to communicate with your mobile network and automatically activates it. It can also hold data such as your phone book and text messages.

SIMs are required for all GSM phones and make swapping phones much easier. If you want to change to a different phone, you can just remove your SIM and put it in the new handset and it will work instantly. There’s no hassle to upgrade to a new phone. Or if you run out of battery, you can use your SIM (and your minutes and plan) in a friend’s phone temporarily.

You can even switch mobile network but keep the same phone by just getting a new SIM from your new network. You keep all the information on your phone and can even keep the same phone number.

A further advantage comes when travelling abroad when you might want to try to avoid expensive roaming fees. You can simply buy a local SIM in whatever country you happen to be in and pop it into your phone. That was you benefit from cheap local call rates.

Free SIM

Many networks offer free Pay As You Go (PAYG) SIM cards. These free SIM cards sometimes even come with free credit once you activate them so you can start making calls right away. It’s even possible to get deals for unlimited texts, unlimited calls or unlimited data with your free SIM.
