Samba Mobile: a first look

samba mobile logoHot on the tails of Impossible Telecom, we recently got a press release from another mobile network that promises to redefine the UK market. Samba Mobile is a brand new project that describes itself as:

An exciting new service that gives you free mobile broadband to your laptop, desktop or tablet. In return, we ask you to watch a few short, high-quality video adverts. You choose what videos to watch and when to watch them.

Now that’s rather interesting especially if you’re one of many people paying a fortune for data rates on your mobile or tablet or for a dongle with the main mobile networks.

This isn’t the first time networks or ISPs have attempted to offer free access funded by adverts but it will be interesting to see what they are doing differently to make it work this time round. It also remains to be seen how intrusive the ads are.

Samba Mobile is currently not available and hasn’t launched yet in the UK but we’ve heard it may work by letting you build up “credits” by viewing adverts which you can then spend on bandwidth or time online. It’s also likely they they will run on 3’s impressive data infrastructure.

So what do you think? Are you fed up of ads online or would it be a price worth paying for free mobile internet? And do you think it will last?

Tons of changes to Vectone and Delight

Since we wrote our reviews of Vectone and Delight Mobile there have been loads and loads of changes to their tariffs and pricing schemes. We set aside a day last week to trawl through all their current offers and make sense of their rates. We also made several calls to their customer services to confirm pricing information that’s not available on their website. After having done all this, we then went back and rewrote large parts of our pages Vectone Review, Delight Review and Mobile Comparison Table to reflect all the updates.

Hopefully this is the clearest explanation of all their offers and deals in one place and it’ll help you decide whether or not you want to switch to them. So please head over and take a look and let us know what you think. If you’re a current customer, we’d really appreciate a comment with some of your thoughts on these two networks and also please feel free to leave a rating.

Lycamobile threatened with dissolution

LycaMobile have been revealed to have paid absolutely no corporation tax at all the last three years. Even though they generated a turnover of almost £150 million in the years between 2008 and 2010, they have yet to pay HMRC any tax at all.

Bringing the company into even more disrepute, LycaMobile donated £136,000 Conservative party in the current quarter and another £40,000 in the quarter before that. So, even though they claim not be making any profit at all, they have enough spare cash around give to the big business-friendly, average man-hating Tories. In fact, they’re one of the Cameron’s biggest donors.

John Mann, the Labour MP who has campaigned for greater scrutiny of party funding, said:

If the company can afford to give to the Tories, they can afford to pay British taxes. Maybe the Tories should consider giving money to the Inland Revenue.

The company is based in London and was founded by Subaskaran Allirajah who also runs Lycatel which sells international calling cards, an even more lucrative business. He said that LycaMobile have yet to make any business profits which is why they haven’t paid any tax. However, there were ready been in trouble with the Advertising Standards Authority for misleading adverts about international call prices and the company has been threatened with being dissolved by Companies House because of the severely delayed filing of accounts this year.
