Where to pre-order iPhone 5 in the UK?

So were you impressed by the announcement of Apple’s new iPhone 5? Are you counting down the days to the release on 21 September. If nothing will stop you upgrading as soon as possible, you’re probably looking into how to pre-order the new handset already. Across all the UK networks pre-orders have already started but due to some Ofcom-related complications regarding 4G LTE radio frequency bands, things are a little complex this time round. Hope you’re ready to get in line…

As Orange and T-Mobile will have a monopoly on 4G connectivity across all phones in the UK for about a year, you’d be wise to take this into account if you’re planning on switching networks or taking out a new contract for the iPhone 5. It’s also worth noting that the iPhone specs that Apple announced on Wednesday don’t include pentaband connectivity so it’s unclear whether the 4G connection will ever work with other networks in the UK. Quite why Apple did this is unclear but if 4G is a must-have for you, it’s probably safest to order an iPhone 5 on an Everything Everywhere network (Orange or T-Mobile). But if you just want an iPhone 5 and the best price available, read on for our full round-up of UK deals.

Orange

Orange are offering four options for pre-ordering the iPhone 5. You can get it in both black and white and in the three sizes – 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. All plans come with unlimited UK calls and texts so the only other thing you have to decide is how much data you want. Prices range from £36/month for 1GB of mobile data per month to £51/month for unlimited data. All plans are 24 month contracts. The cost of the handset itself is as follows:
16GB 32GB 64GB
£36/month – 1GB data £109.99 £219.99 £269.99
£41/month – 2GB data £29.99 £139.99 £209.99
£46/month – 3GB data free £89.99 £179.99
£51/month – unlimited data free £39.99 £129.99

T-Mobile

T-Mobile are, of course, offering the iPhone 5 in all specifications too. Not only that, but they also have a baffling array of possible tariffs to fit any usage profile. Unlike Orange, they also offer 18 month contracts in addition to 24 month contracts which is great if you don’t like being locked in for two years. And, while their prices might not seem as competitive as Orange’s, if you run the calculations you’ll see that you’ll actually be spending less money for the same thing in many cases. And don’t forget that they have exactly the same signal as Orange and will both launch with 4G capability. Make sure you crunch the numbers before you make a commitment – as is often the case you can safe a packet by spending a little more up front. Here’s a list of some of the best tariffs available on T-Mobile:
16GB 32GB 64GB
£21/month
50 mins, 250 texts, 750MB data
£339 £419 £449
£31/month
300 mins, unlimited texts, 750MB data
£179 £269 £369
£36/month
2000 mins, unlimited texts and data
£109 £219 £269
£41/month
unlimited mins, texts and data
£49 £149 £219

Three Mobile

Three only have two price plans available for each model of iPhone 5 – the Ultimate Internet 500 and the amazing One Plan. Both come with completely unlimited all-you-can-eat mobile internet and practically-limitless texts (you have 5000 a month which should be enough for even the most SMS-addicted users). The main difference is that the Ultimate Internet 500 tariff “only” has 500 any-network minutes while the One Plan has a mammoth 2000 any network minutes plus an additional 5000 3-to-3 minutes. Best of all it’s only a couple of quid more. As usual, Three Mobile is offering amongst the most competitive prices on the new iPhone 5. In fact, over the course of a 2 year contract, you can hundreds by choosing Three over some of the other networks. Here’s the full pricing lowdown:
16GB 32GB 64GB
500 mins, 5000 texts, unlimited data £34/month
£79 upfront
£37/month
£89 upfront
£40/month
£109 upfront
2000 mins, 5000 texts, unlimited data £36/month
£79 upfront
£39/month
£89 upfront
£42/month
£109 upfront

Vodafone

Vodafone are the only UK network to offer the new iPhone 5 on 12 month contracts. But, as with everyone else, the longer 24 month contracts are where the real value lies. Compared to Orange and T-Mobile, their plans are really competitive and they even match up rather well with Three. All the tariffs listed in the table below come with unlimited UK calls and texts and only the amount of internet varies. With the 16GB iPhone 5 starting at just £37/month with a £99 upfront cost, it’s a great value option to consider. Here’s all the price plans:
16GB 32GB 64GB
£37/month – 1GB data £99 £209 £289
£42/month – 2GB data £49 £149 £229
£47/month – 2GB data free £89 £169

O2

Unfortunately, at the time of going to press O2 have yet to confirm their iPhone tariffs. All we know is that they will only offer 24 month price plans and, as usual, their data allowance is very measly indeed. In fact, if you choose O2 as your network for your iPhone 5, the biggest monthly data allowance you can buy is a measly 1GB. This pittance can even set you back up to £46/month plus an unspecified upfront cost. Maybe O2 will surprise us with cheap rates for the phone itself and it must be admitted that all their tariffs come with unlimited minutes and texts but you’ll almost certainly be limited by the tiny amount of included data. You can register for more info now and please keep checking back or subscribe to the blog for update about the O2 price plans.

Samsung Galaxy S3 sells 20 million

With the new iPhone 5 due out ever so soon, the latest sales figures from the flagship Samsung Galaxy S3 set a pretty high target to aim for. The South Korean company has just released its latest sales figures and has smugly announced that the Galaxy S3 sold over 20 million handsets in only its first 100 days of being available. Not bad for just over three months.

The gargantuan figures make the Galaxy S3 Samsung’s most successful smartphone to date. The wide range of colours the phone is available in not to mention the stunning new Google OS – Jelly Bean – have been cited as important factors in the positive figures. Even Apple’s jealous lawsuits haven’t managed to significantly slow down sales of what’s been called “the best phone available”.

The Galaxy S3 has been massively more successful than its predecessors, the Galaxy S1 and Galaxy S2. In fact, it has actually sold six times faster than the already impressive S2. The full figures reveal that Galaxy S3 sold 6 million units in Europe, 4 million in North America the rest elsewhere but mainly in Asia.

What’s clear is that the iPhone 5 will really have its work cut out for it. While it should be able to outsell Samsung’s offering due to Apple’s genius marketing, according to the latest figures the Galaxy S3 has been doing much better than the iPhone 4S. It’s also been reviewing better. Only time will tell who wins the next smartphone battle.

What’s your opinion? Do you have a Galaxy S3? Or are you holding out for the iPhone 5? Do you prefer Apple or Samsung phones? And what do you think will sell more – the Samsung Galaxy S3 or the Apple iPhone 5?

iPhone 5 launch – all the details

What’s that? There’s an Apple media event today? Do you think they’ll mention the new iPhone? Of course they will.

With most of the details of the new iPhone already leaked, today’s launch didn’t hold many surprises. All the same, we’ve got all the stats and details for you right here. Wanna know the name of the new phone, the screen size, the all-important pricing? Read on…

So everyone’s guesses about the name were right – it is, of course, called the iPhone 5. Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller started his presentation by announcing the new phone’s name. He went on to say that it’s the thinnest and lightest iPhone ever. It’s only 7.6mm thick and weighs just 112 grams. We’d rather they doubled both of those dimensions and gave it a better battery life…

Next, some points were mentioned about the screen. It’s now finally caught up to the rest of the smartphone market and is 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. Phew – no more crappy 3:2 ratio iPhone. It’s also claimed that the new screen has better colour saturation. The screen is also bigger at 4 inches and has a 1136*640 resolution. The pixel density is still 326 ppi. It’s pretty disappointing there’s no HD screen still 🙁

The next big announcement is the 4G connectivity. But it’s not that exciting as we all already knew that. Looks like EE (Everything Everywhere) will have a 4G iPhone monopoly for about a year after all. What will 4G LTE mean in practise? Well theoretically it allows for massive fat pipe bandwidth allowing your access to the internet at up to 100Mbps. The reality might not be quite as rosy. In other countries whether 4G is already active, speeds aren’t quite at the 100 Mbps theoretical maximum yet and people are having to pay a hefty premium for the speeds. Expect to pay maybe about £50/month for a decent 4G plan. And also watch out for bandwidth caps – it’s unlikely we’ll see truly unlimited 4G plans unfortunately. Mobile phone companies are still playing catch up in investing in the future.

With regard to the rest of the phone’s innards, Apple are claiming that the new A6 chip it’s sporting will offer twice as fast processing power and twice as fast graphics too. Sounds promising if it delivers. The iPhone 5 has both graphics running off the same main chip unlike the previous 4S which had a separate graphics processor.

What about the battery life? Things aren’t that different. After all, lithium ion technology is only improving gradually these days. It seems to have hit a bit of a wall. Still, Apple claim there is over 200 hours of standby time (that’s more than 4 days, we’ll believe it when we see it). Also, they reckon it will manage 40 hours of music, 10 hours of video and 8-10 hours of internet.

Phil next moved on to the new camera? Can it beat the Samsung Galaxy S3 and high end Nokia Lumia? First of all, the lens delay is meant to be fast and it can take photos at the same time as videos. The camera’s sensor is only 8MP but this is still decent for a phone. It sports a ƒ2.4 lens and can record 1080p video at 30 frames per second. Even the front camera can manage 720p recording.

There’s also a new connector called “Lightning”. Unless you’re willing to fork out for a bulky and overpriced converter, that means all your existing chargers, docks, speakers, car adaptors, etc. are now useless. Gee, thanks.

The new iPhone will run a new improved iOS 6. From the presentation, it’s hard to make out what’s outstandingly new about it though. Siri is slightly improved and there’s new Maps but that’s about it. Nothing mindblowing. And no mention of NFC at all. For those expecting Apple to catch up with Android by finally introducing widgets and all the other features missing from iOS, they will be a little disappointed. Lame-o!

Finally, one of the most vital stats – pricing. We don’t know the UK prices just yet but there will be three models. Unsurprisingly, they come in at 16GB:, 32GB and 64GB. The 16GB will be $199, the 32GB will be $299 and, guess what, the 64GB will be $399. Those are network-subsidised prices! We have no word on pricing details in the UK yet other than it will start at a whopping £529.

So there we go. Wanna get your greasy mitts on one? It’s out on 21st September and we’ll of course round up all the best deals available in the UK for you.
